5 Reasons To Watch Koikimo

The story of Koikimo is very simple and easy to follow: An attractive businessman is saved by a high school girl when he nearly accidentally falls down the stairs of a city train station. The man who’s also the older brother of the girl’s friend, makes it his business to repay her. Here are 5 reasons to watch Koikimo.

Disclaimer about Koikimo

Before we begin I think I’m going to address that just like some anime I’ve covered like Bakemonogatari, (see my post about Is Bakemonogatari Worth Watching) this series unfortunately features a relationship between a much older man and an underage girl.

There are no explicit sexual interactions between the two, but their relationship or (in the story’s case) lack thereof, is inappropriate and creepy nonetheless.

It’s not on the same level as Monster Musume: Everyday Life with Monster Girls (2015) at all and is pretty innocent, but if you’re not into this stuff at all (which I’m not) please skip this review and check out other Anime content: Anime Romance. Thank you.

5. Simple but beautiful

Koikimo doesn’t stand out that much and isn’t unique. It’s not a super interesting and dramatic love story involving two amazing main characters it’s rather the opposite. Which is why it’s also classed as a comedy as well.

What follows are a series of attempts for the older man to win over the affection of Ichika, the girl.

The story also incorporates many other characters and side characters who also play a vital role in many sub-narratives within the story. Ichika is a pretty likeable MC, she wasn’t too pretty or overly amazing either. and this makes her character more believable.

4. Animation

Let’s start with the Animation, which was very detailed and had a nice touch. It’s nothing over the top, but good enough that you notice it straight away.

The settings and backdrops are nice, really showing different areas of urban Tokyo.

3. Soundtrack

The soundtrack and the opening theme for Koikimo I liked. Right at the end of the theme, the singer hits a nice note. It sounds very good when you listen again and it’s nice to have a theme which does its job.

It doesn’t try to be too revolutionary and it’s a pretty simple opening which I loved about it. The opening theme and the visuals are what you’d get if you mixed the Toradora opening with the Monthly-Girls Nozaki-kun opening theme.

2. Engaging Narrative

Despite its controversial premise, Koikimo manages to maintain viewer interest with its narrative progression, offering moments of tension, humour, and genuine emotional depth throughout its episodes, making it worth considering for those intrigued by unconventional romances.

The series offers poignant and emotionally resonant moments, particularly in its exploration of romantic gestures and interactions between the characters, showcasing instances of genuine sweetness amid the contentious backdrop.

1. Character Development

Despite its initial discomforting premise, Koikimo gradually develops its characters beyond simplistic portrayals, allowing viewers to witness the evolution of both Ryo and Ichika as they navigate their unconventional relationship.

The average score of Koikimo is about 7.2, which I think is fair in my opinion.

I think the reason it got a lower score than I would have liked is because of originality.
