After five long seasons and a Netflix movie, many fans have expressed gratitude and praise for The Last Kingdom, as it has been very successful even with non-English audiences. However, this has left many fans asking, will there be: The Last Kingdom Season 6? Well, in this post, we’ll answer just that.
Overview
The Last Kingdom is a historical drama television series based on Bernard Cornwell’s “The Saxon Stories” novels. The series is set in 9th and 10th century England during the time of Viking invasions and the formation of what would become a unified English kingdom.
Plot: The Last Kingdom
The story follows Uhtred of Bebbanburg, a Saxon nobleman who is captured and raised by Vikings. Torn between his Saxon heritage and his Viking upbringing, Uhtred struggles to reclaim his ancestral homeland of Bebbanburg while navigating a world of political intrigue, battles, and shifting loyalties.

Main cast that could star in The Last Kingdom Season 6
The series is well-known for its intense battle scenes, complex characters, and depiction of the brutal and tumultuous period of English history. Here a some of the main characters who will star in The Last Kingdom Season 6.
- Alexander Dreymon as Uhtred of Bebbanburg: The main character, a warrior caught between his Saxon birth and Viking upbringing.
- Mark Rowley as Finan: A loyal Irish warrior who becomes one of Uhtred’s closest allies.
The show originally aired on BBC America and later became a Netflix exclusive, running for five seasons.
The Last Kingdom Season 6
To understand if there will be a new season, what we need to understand is the mechanics of Netflix and this specific franchise, as all franchises are different.
While not winning any awards, The Last Kingdom was very popular with fans, critically acclaimed, and up there (in my opinion) with some of the best TV series of all time, such as True Detective, which I’ve covered many times here before.

Here are a few more reasons:
- With 5 seasons completed and 1 movie released, the original material has been used extensively.
- The ending of the TV series had a very dramatic ending in which Uhtred of Bebbanburg seems to have found peace and achieved his goal.
- There is not much need for a new season as many of the villains and characters have been defeated, there is nothing much more for Uhtred to gain.
Could all this really mean we won’t get to see another series? Well not really, we just never know with Netflix. They’re always changing their mind.
On the other hand, I think it’s safe to say that this brilliant, expertly written and beautifully produced historical franchise won’t be returning again, ever.
It’s the same deal as the Inbetweeners. When you make something so good, loved, admired and shared by so many different people, sometimes it’s best to leave your creation unaltered and not attempt to milk it for more money.
I hope this is what they do with The Last Kingdom, as this franchise has earned this through and through.
I know this may not be the answer you were hoping for, but really, I think this is what will happen.
