As they endure relentless storms, starvation, and unimaginable hardships, their survival instincts are tested to the extreme.

This harrowing experience of human endurance and desperation later becomes the inspiration for Herman Melville’s famous novel, Moby-Dick.

Another one of our favourite boat movies is set in the 1960s and revolves around a group of rogue DJs who broadcast rock and roll music from a boat in the North Sea to rebel against the British government.

With BBC radio broadcasts less than an hour of pop music a day, forcing pirate DJs to take up the slack from boats anchored outside British waters.

Quentin (Bill Nighy) is the commander of such a pirate station, overseeing a host of seedy, lusty and dope-smoking DJs, including the Count (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and Dave (Nick Frost), who makes it his personal mission to see to it that Quentin’s newly arrived godson (Tom Sturridge) loses his virginity.

When a young swimmer is tragically attacked by a shark near the shores of Amity Island, Police Chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) urges town officials to shut down the beaches for safety. However, the mayor, Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton), refuses, fearing it would devastate the local tourism economy.

Determined to stop the deadly predator, Brody teams up with a marine biologist, Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss), and a seasoned fisherman, Quint (Robert Shaw), to track down the shark. Together, the trio face off against nature’s fiercest predator in a thrilling and dangerous pursuit.

All Is Lost is one of the movies I watched when I was a young teen, and as I remember it, this movie was awesome and climatic.

While undertaking a solo journey in the Indian Ocean, an experienced sailor (Robert Redford) awakens to find his boat severely damaged after striking a drifting shipping container. With his communication and navigation systems down, he is left isolated and vulnerable as he navigates into a fierce storm.

Though he manages to survive the tempest, his chances of rescue grow slim as supplies run low and danger from the sea surrounds him. With the vast ocean stretching in every direction, the sailor is forced to confront both nature’s brutality and his own fight for survival.

6. Life of Pi

Of course, this list would not be complete without the mention of Life of Pi, I mean this was a complete hit when it came out, and everyone was talking about it.

After a decision to relocate their family and remaining animals from India to Canada, Santosh and Gita Patel embark on a large freighter with their sons.

When a devastating storm wrecks the ship, their teenage son Pi (Suraj Sharma) is left stranded as the only human survivor.

However, Pi soon realizes he isn’t entirely alone – a powerful Bengal tiger has also made its way onto the lifeboat.
