Revisiting Three Incredible Scenes From The Messenger: The Story Of Joan Of Arc

Recently discovered this movie based on the famous historical figure Joan of Arc. Messenger is a brilliant movie that romanticizes the character. It shows her rise to glory in the French army. It also depicts her downfall at the hands of the English monarchy. Messenger is not the sort of movie I would usually enjoy; but after watching it, I fell in love. Here are three impressive scenes from Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc. You will not want to miss them. This film is worth watching.

Overview

Starring Milla Jovovich The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc follows Joan from her birth. The movie begins with a brief glimpse of her childhood.

It sets the stage by showing a horrific and hard-to-watch rape scene. In this scene, Joan’s mother is brutally attacked by English soldiers when their village is pillaged.

Setting up hatred for the English is an important part of this movie, as it gives the viewers a clear side to root for: Joan of Arc and the French army and the king of France (played by John Malkovich).

Set during the Hundred Years’ War, it was a time when the Kingdom of England occupied parts of France. France was also dealing with internal problems.

Following closely Joan’s rise to the army is all part of the tale. She inspired many different soldiers to stand and fight. With the bitter ending, it’s hard to see why many people don’t like this movie.

1. The French breach the outer castle walls

The first scene to mention is the scene where the French, led by Joan and hundreds of soldiers, break into the English castle walls. They push a siege tower onto the drawbridge.

The scene begins with Joan shouting for her troops to rise from their sleep after the failed attack the following day. They’re tired and Joan begins shouting for all of them to rise, as the English watch on in amusement.

The English seem to believe that she is dead for some reason, and when she is seen by one of the English commander’s men he reveals to his superior that she is “back from the dead” – this is where things start to get going.

2. The French smash the inner castle walls

My second favourite scene from this movie is straight after the first one. In this scene, they breach the inner walls of the castle. They use a battering ram and fire arrows to weaken the wall and in the process, a chaotic scene involving vocal music ensues, and Joan of Arc get’s sucked in.

They breach the wall and one of the English commanders has to jump off the bridge. They time it with the moment of the breach of the wall and then music as well and this makes for a great climatic scene which I very much enjoyed.

3. Joan turns the English army away

In another scene from the movie, the French army is facing off with the English at Orléans in 1429.

It’s a very important part of the story. It is a defining moment in the movie. This moment really starts to capture the attention of Charles VII of France. John Malkovich plays Charles VII and does a good job as well.

During this scene a montage plays and we get some great theatrical music as well to accompany it. Take a look at this scene below.
