Over the last couple of decades, there have been many different crime shows on TV and streaming sites that we’ve had the pleasure of watching. Crime dramas are one of my favourite genres as well, and I am more than happy to share with you the best crime shows of the 2000s. All of these 2000s are complete with updated IMDB ratings. Also, these are not ranked in order of release or superiority.

12. The Sopranos (6 Seasons, 86 Episodes)

The Sopranos (1999) on IMDb (function(d,s,id){var js,stags=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(d.getElementById(id)){return;}js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”https://ia.media-imdb.com/images/G/01/imdb/plugins/rating/js/rating.js”;stags.parentNode.insertBefore(js,stags);})(document,”script”,”imdb-rating-api”);

I’ve actually started watching this in the last couple of months and I’m so glad I did. The Sopranos follows the life of a fictional Italian Mafia Capo (Captain) who runs a crew in New Jersey.

The series which has over 5 seasons features the life of Tony Soprano, and his family.

As well as life in the mafia, disputes, murders, business and conflict. There are also tons of elements of comedy in there as well. There are also many sex scenes and scenes of violence, so if you’re into that kind of thing, then make sure to check it out.

Although it began in the late ’90s, The Sopranos remained a dominant force in the 2000s, offering a deep exploration of mob life.

11. The Wire (5 Seasons, 60 Episodes)

The Wire (2002) on IMDb (function(d,s,id){var js,stags=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(d.getElementById(id)){return;}js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”https://ia.media-imdb.com/images/G/01/imdb/plugins/rating/js/rating.js”;stags.parentNode.insertBefore(js,stags);})(document,”script”,”imdb-rating-api”);

This critically acclaimed 2000s crime show delved into the interconnected worlds of drug trafficking, law enforcement, and the inner city of Baltimore. This television series delves into the Baltimore drug scene from multiple perspectives, offering viewers insights into the lives of both law enforcement officers and individuals involved in drug trafficking and addiction.

Additionally, the show explores various aspects of the city, including its government, bureaucracy, educational institutions, and the role of the news media.

10. Breaking Bad (5 Seasons, 62 Episodes)

Breaking Bad (2008) on IMDb (function(d,s,id){var js,stags=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(d.getElementById(id)){return;}js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”https://ia.media-imdb.com/images/G/01/imdb/plugins/rating/js/rating.js”;stags.parentNode.insertBefore(js,stags);})(document,”script”,”imdb-rating-api”);

Of course, we’ve all heard of this 2000s crime show, which takes place in Albuquerque, New Mexico. From 2008 to 2010, Breaking Bad unravels the story of Walter White.

He starts as a desperate and disillusioned high school chemistry teacher and undergoes a dramatic transformation into a ruthless leader within the local methamphetamine drug scene.

This transformation is motivated by his dire need to secure his family’s financial future following a diagnosis of inoperable lung cancer. However, if you watch this series to the end, you’ll realise something more sinister.

9. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (15 Seasons, 337 Episodes)

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2000) on IMDb (function(d,s,id){var js,stags=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(d.getElementById(id)){return;}js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”https://ia.media-imdb.com/images/G/01/imdb/plugins/rating/js/rating.js”;stags.parentNode.insertBefore(js,stags);})(document,”script”,”imdb-rating-api”);

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of CSI myself, having watched most of the episodes. I’d say that the earlier seasons were and still are much better when compared to the new seasons. However, do not let this fool you into thinking CSI is not the show for you.

Following the Las Vegas Crime Lab led by Gill Grissom, CSI follows each case (mostly murders) as the team collects and processes forensic evidence, identifies suspects and convicts suspects.

If you did not know how to dispose of a body and get away with it, you certainly will after watching CSI. There are so many different episodes to watch and it is certainly a binge-watching-worthy series. Perfect to have on while you work for example.

8. Criminal Minds (15 Seasons, 324 Episodes)

Criminal Minds (2005) on IMDb (function(d,s,id){var js,stags=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(d.getElementById(id)){return;}js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”https://ia.media-imdb.com/images/G/01/imdb/plugins/rating/js/rating.js”;stags.parentNode.insertBefore(js,stags);})(document,”script”,”imdb-rating-api”);

This is one of the best long-running 2000s crime shows and it follows an elite team of FBI profilers as they track down serial killers and other dangerous criminals.

The team are dedicated to dissecting the intricate psychology of the nation’s most disturbed criminals. I will warn you, Criminal Minds is most definitely one of the more violent and gruesome 2000s Crime Shows on this list, but it has a few moments of comedy as well.

7. Dexter (8 Seasons,96 Episodes)

After I heard my media teacher rambling on about this show and about how good it was I decided to give it a go, and all I can say is that it’s a breath of fresh air.

Instead of following the police, detectives or prosecutors, for example, this show follows a serial killer, Dexter Morgan. He was a forensic blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department who was also a vigilante serial killer.

Dexter possesses a distinctive set of moral rules that guide his murderous tendencies, compelling him to target only those he deems guilty.

Watch Dexter.

Working as a blood spatter analyst for the Miami police grants him exclusive access to crime scenes, where he collects evidence, scrutinizes clues, and verifies DNA to ensure the guilt of his intended victims before carrying out his lethal acts.

6. NCIS (20 Seasons, 457 Episodes)

NCIS (2003) on IMDb (function(d,s,id){var js,stags=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(d.getElementById(id)){return;}js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”https://ia.media-imdb.com/images/G/01/imdb/plugins/rating/js/rating.js”;stags.parentNode.insertBefore(js,stags);})(document,”script”,”imdb-rating-api”);

I have many fond memories of this show from when I was a kid as it was always on during the daytime. It works in the same kind of way CSI and Criminal Minds work but mostly for terrorist-related incidents if that makes sense. They also investigate corrupt soldiers and security service members as well, making it one of the best crime shows of the 2000s.

The 2000s crime show stands as an American military-focused police procedural television series and serves as the inaugural offering in the expansive NCIS media franchise.

This show orbits around a fictitious ensemble of special agents associated with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, blending elements of military drama, police procedural storytelling, and moments of humour.

5. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (24 Seasons, 538 Episodes)

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999) on IMDb (function(d,s,id){var js,stags=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(d.getElementById(id)){return;}js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”https://ia.media-imdb.com/images/G/01/imdb/plugins/rating/js/rating.js”;stags.parentNode.insertBefore(js,stags);})(document,”script”,”imdb-rating-api”);

Although it started in the late ’90s, SVU continued to be a popular and influential crime procedural series throughout the 2000s and beyond.

In the crime series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit on NBC, viewers are immersed in the gritty underbelly of New York City as a dedicated team of detectives from an elite unit tackle a range of sexually-oriented crimes, encompassing cases involving rape, paedophilia, and domestic violence, working tirelessly to investigate and bring perpetrators to justice.

4. Prison Break (5 Seasons, 90 Episodes)

Prison Break (2005) on IMDb (function(d,s,id){var js,stags=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(d.getElementById(id)){return;}js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”https://ia.media-imdb.com/images/G/01/imdb/plugins/rating/js/rating.js”;stags.parentNode.insertBefore(js,stags);})(document,”script”,”imdb-rating-api”);

Here’s another one of the 2000s Crime Shows that I enjoyed watching as a teen. The story follows Michael Scofield, a man determined to aid his brother, Lincoln Burrows, who firmly believes in his innocence, in escaping from a high-security prison.

To accomplish this, Michael orchestrates a scheme to deliberately get himself incarcerated in the same facility. The entirety of the first season unfolds the intricate plan they devise to break free.

There’s a reason my mates would always be ranting about this show and asking: “Did you see Prison Break?” “Have you watched the new episode of Prison Break?” and so on.

Give this 2000s crime show a go and I don’t think you’ll regret it. Watch Prison Break now.

3. The Shield (7 Seasons, 88 Episodes)

The Shield (2002) on IMDb (function(d,s,id){var js,stags=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(d.getElementById(id)){return;}js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”https://ia.media-imdb.com/images/G/01/imdb/plugins/rating/js/rating.js”;stags.parentNode.insertBefore(js,stags);})(document,”script”,”imdb-rating-api”);

Another gritty series similar to The Wire which follows a corrupt police strike team in Los Angeles and explores complex moral dilemmas.

This dramatic series delves into the lives and investigations of Vic Mackey, a morally compromised police officer, and the corrupt LAPD division that he leads.

Like I said if you’re into The Wire then you should give this 2000s crime show a go for sure, you may just find it to be one of your favourites.

2. Numb3rs (2005-2010)

Numb3rs (2005) on IMDb (function(d,s,id){var js,stags=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(d.getElementById(id)){return;}js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=”https://ia.media-imdb.com/images/G/01/imdb/plugins/rating/js/rating.js”;stags.parentNode.insertBefore(js,stags);})(document,”script”,”imdb-rating-api”);

A unique crime procedural that combines mathematics with crime-solving, following a mathematician who helps his FBI agent brother solve cases.

Here is another 2000s crime show that is similar to NCIS. Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan, a forensic anthropologist, joins forces with the confident F.B.I. Special Agent Seeley Booth to assemble a team dedicated to probing homicide cases.

Frequently, the only evidence at their disposal consists of decomposed flesh or skeletal remains. This series centred around a forensic anthropologist and an FBI special agent as they solved murders by examining human remains.
