Dumbbel Nan Kilo Moteru or in English “How Heavy Are The Dumbbells You Lift” is one of the more enjoyable and memorable animes i’ve watched since I’ve stated anime. But will it return for a season 2? Although there were only 12 episodes for me to enjoy, I still stayed watching it until the very last episode. It’s a funny, informational and enjoyable story was fun to watch and I even learned some things about physical workout that I wasn’t aware of, so in theory, I actually have some admiration for the show due to its informative values.
The colourful and bright way Dumbbel Nan Kilo Moteru is drawn makes it very easy to watch and enjoy. And honestly I think you’ll have a great time watching it like I did. It’s not really in the romance genre and is more comedic, but it’s still very fun to watch.
The main story is pretty straight and simple and revolves around a college student called Hibiki. Since her last college break she notices that she has put on weight physically. With the prospect of becoming more attractive to the opposite sex, Hibiki realises that she needs to loose some weight and gain the body she wants in order to satisfy her self esteem and become conventionally more attractive to the opposite sex. On her way home from school her best friend Ayaka notes that she has gained weight over a period of time, and warns her that getting a boyfriend will not be an easy task if she doesn’t start either going on a food diet, or committing to regular exercise. Later, Hibiki decides to join the new gym that has just started in the city they live in. She is attracted to it because of its good reputation and enticing nature. However, Hibiki finds out it’s full of body builders who are only there to basically increase their body mass and “get as big as possible”. Nevertheless she and another girl called Akemi, also join the gym. Earlier on, it’s noted that Akemi is more enthusiastic about the activities that Hibiki and herself take part in that Hibiki but this sometimes encourages Hibiki to try even harder. It’s revealed that the reason Akemi is so enthusiastic about working out and the gym they are attending in general is because she has a muscle fetish. This visibly makes Sakura uncomfortable, but nevertheless she decides to join the gym as she is attracted to her trainer Mr Machio.
The whole series offers and insight into physical workout and apparently (this hasn’t been proven, and we are certainly not saying it’s true) it was pushed by certain Japanese royal state entities to encourage more Japanese citizens to start working out and to become more fit. This is just a theory but anyway, the main 12 episodes is basically Hibiki and the other characters personal trainer teaching them new ways to work out. It doesn’t seem very interesting when you put it like that, but I found Dumbbel Nan Kilo Moteru to be very enjoyable to watch and even quite funny. Even Arnold Schwarzenegger makes appearances in the later episodes, which I found really funny.
In short though, if you’ve just finished watching something sad and depressing like Scum’s Wish or Clannad, I highly recommend you give Dumbbel Nan Kilo Moteru a watch because I don’t think you will regret. It’s not too erotic, it’s not too over the top and it’s pretty funny as well.
Also the intro theme song is very catchy. I couldn’t get this out of my head for days after finishing the series. (Not saying thats a bad thing).
Sakura Hibiki, or “Hibiki” as she is referred to by her friend, is a student who attends the gym in the series. She is energetic and has an admirable character. However, her main goal in the series is to get the desired physique she wants. This is clearly shown in the first and earlier episodes of the series, and it sets up the narrative very well. She has simple needs and goals and wants to find a boyfriend just like her classmates. She enjoys eating food of different sorts and she isn’t (not that it’s a problem) afraid of expressing her love for food and particularly consuming food during different times of the day.
These characters are great in providing a good atmosphere for the show and I really enjoyed seeing them in this series. There are actually a few characters that were not included in the series, and you can find these characters in the original manga (obviously). These include Sakura’s brother and various other characters at the gym and other locations.
It doesn’t bother me that they don’t include these characters in the anime, but it might bother you. I noticed that lots of fans of the original manga stated they were very excited and happy about the anime adaption. You can even read the comments on the episodes on Funimation if don’t believe me. Regardless, it seems that Doga Kobo did a good job in adapting the manga into an animated series.
So Will There Be A Season 2?
The ending to Dumbbel Nan Kilo Moteru wasn’t exactly conclusive, but does this mean that we will see the series return for season 2? As of 2020, 9 volumes have been written, and technically, the manga is still on going, (2016 – Present) meaning that there is more content to be written by the author (Yabako Sandrovich) and then illustrated by MAAM. This means that there is a possibility for season 2, as the manga is still being written and therefore there is content for the anime adaption to use. This is because most animes are adapted from the manga written by their original creators.
We’re not saying that season 2 of Dumbbel Nan Kilo Moteru is certain, but what we can say is that the popularity of the anime adaption was significant and it was loved among fans and critics, and myself also. Therefore, the possibility for a season 2 of this series is high, and we would be surprised if production for season 2 did not take place. Honestly, we cant say for sure if season 2 will take place but we are confident that it will happen.
When Will Season 2 Premier?
We would say that if season 2 was going to take place and production had finished for season 2 then we would expect season 2 to premier or certainly air anytime between 2021 and 2023. We would draw the line at 2025 for obvious reasons and would estimate that the new season would come out in anytime late next year. Given the popularity of the anime and the fact that the manga is still to be written we are confident there will be a season 2.
We are not telling you, the person who is reading this blog, that there will 100% certain be a season 2, but you can see where we are coming from. So what we can hope for is a season 2 based on the manga that can, and hopefully will be written. Also, when we say it’s important to note that the ending of Dumbbel Nan Kilo Moteru wasn’t conclusive, we mean that we never got to see Hibiki find a match for herself from the opposite sex and in my opinion it wasn’t very conclusive. So hopefully, if season 2 does happen, it will pick up where the first season left on.
